J-Renee

In addition to my scholarly research, I greatly value the incorporation of performance within my academic career. This page highlights my professional works under my artist name, J-Renee, and previous recordings.

Under the Blue

On January 26th, 2024 I released “Under the Blue,” the second single preceding my debut solo album, scheduled for Fall 2024. A collaboration between myself and my producer, Orion Redwolf, this song is an ode to my upbringing in my hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

“Under the Blue” is an alternative R&B song that focuses on the balance between live instrumentation and synthetic sound. It is an addition to the long list of nostalgic tunes by artists reminiscing about their childhood in the Tidewater area, such as fellow 757 natives Pharrell Williams, Missy Elliot, and Timbaland. Fans of the artists Anderson.Paak, Mac Miller, Bren Joy, and Thundercat will enjoy this laid back tune. It was written and produced in 2 days in Manhattan with contributions from instrumentalist Levi Moneyhun and engineer Sam Roller.

Spaced Out

My career as J-Renee began in 2022 during my master’s degree in Tallahassee, FL with the release of my first single “Spaced Out.” This song marks the first collaboration between myself and Orion Redwolf, and the start of my first debut solo album (forthcoming).

Hoos in Treble

Before my solo artist debut, I had my first professional recording experience during my undergraduate years with my a capella group Hoos in Treble (HIT). Here's our 2019 album, Reign. Released during my third year of college, Reign is an ode to my tenure as HIT’s Music Director.

I am featured as a soloist on “Say It,” originally performed by Flume, and “Freedom,” originally performed by Beyoncé.

Reclaiming Everyday Content (REC)

REC (Reclaiming Everyday Content) is a group of 14 producers, performers, and writers in the University of Virginia Music Department’s “Composing Mixtapes” class (taught by Dr. A.D. Carson) who collaborated to produce an album of rap, pop, hip-hop, and R&B tracks.

This project, COPE, embodies each person’s perspective of love, power, and justice. In 20 tracks, COPE delves deeply into the mindsets of 14 college students exploring their different identities. I am a lead vocalist and lyricist on “dontwalkaway,” and a featured vocalist and co-lyricist on “Feel You More.”
